Biometrics for Individual Identification in Health and Demographic Surveillance
Biometrics for Individual Identification in Health and Demographic Surveillance was taken place from March, 3rd to 5th, 2009 in South Africa. Its objectives were:
Provide theoretical background to biometrics for individual identification applications, with specific reference to fingerprint identification
2. Identify and investigate specific usage scenarios for fingerprint identification with reference to health and demographic surveillance
3. Share actual implementation experiences of sites that have used fingerprint identification and provide hands-on experience with systems using fingerprint identification
4. Explore future activities with relevance to INDEPTH
This three day workshop consisted of presentations and group discussion. The workshop began by introducing Biometrics and Fingerprint Recognition to the audience, and was followed by two presentations which demonstrated both PCIS (Fingerprint identification in health care) and Agincourt (Fingerprint identification in surveillance). All demonstrations were followed up with a participant discussion to identify site needs.
The content on the second day of the workshop was a combination of:
Integrating finger print recognition into software applications (Devices, Application Programming Interfaces, Application Architecture)
Design considerations for health care applications
Design considerations for surveillance applications
Hands on exercises
On the last day, participants discussed Standardisation of biometric applications within INDEPTH, the way forward.
At the workshop, I presented CHILILAB’s need for biometric methods. I have learnt some basic biometrics theory and gained hands-on experience with actual systems using fingerprint identification. In the near future, if CHILILAB meets the requirement to apply for fingerprint identification, I will be willing to join in.
