Third INDEPTH Workshop on Communication Skills for Health Researchers
This workshop is designed to freshen up and fine-tune participants’ knowledge and skills of writing and presenting scientific knowledge to different audiences
The key aim is to highlight, explore and tackle those aspects of communication skills that impede effective transmission of scientific knowledge and ideas to policy makers and the general population at large. Academic papers, PowerPoint presentations and health leaflets must be sufficiently clear, precise and stylistically appropriate: they must match the purpose, audience and format (PAF), otherwise, they fail to achieve the key purpose of writing them. To effectively communicate ideas in written texts, writers or presenters need to match language, techniques and overall format to the target audience. This can be achieved in many ways including: the use of appropriate vocabulary, the right tone of voice as well presentational and structural techniques.
The specific objectives of this workshop are to enable participants to acquire a clearer and better understanding of the internal organisation of texts which developing thesis statements and topic sentences into coherent and cohesive paragraphs; sequencing information through the use of appropriate markers; using punctuation marks for clarity and impact; using different sentence types for to achieve impact and using rhetorical and other language devices in scientific writing.
Discussion on matching text to purpose and audience (PAF) including layout of text, choice of vocabulary to use, the use of technical (specialised) jargons, and the use of appropriate presentational and structural devices. Further more, there will be discussion sessions on how to acknowledging primary sources, writing a list of references and writing a bibliography.
Discussion on effective ways of bridging the gap between health researchers and policy makers, communication plan as well as design tips for presenting text, graphs and oral presentation, and hands-on training in computer graphics on Power Point presentation.
Bui Tu Quyen, MSc and Dr Duong Kim Tuan will participate this workshop from 16th to 19th February, 2009 in Thailand.
